Text To Speech

Stumble it!

Text To Speech (TTS) is the process by which one inputs a set portion of text and the automated output is spoken voice. Text to speech has made major headway recently with the release of Apple’s Leopard OS and their text to speech software built into their operating system (more info).

Text To Speech Software

There are many different companies that sell software that enables a computer to utilize text to speech in a better manner. Many of the text to speech software programs use AT&T’s Natural Voices. Some of this software is commercially available at a cost and free for personal use. If you’ve never used text to speech software, you can try it here for free. What you’ll notice is that the Natural Voices text to speech reads the words without regard for the next word in a sentence. The Natural Voices also don’t handle punctuation and voice inflexion very well. For example, if you put a question mark at the end of a sentence, Natural Voices usually doesn’t make the sentence sound like a question with a raised voice inflexion a the end.

While text to speech software is great for those with a genuine need, it shouldn’t be used in the call center at the present time. In the future you should start to expect better sounding speech from a variety of companies.
